Dr. Dominic Slade

1. What made you choose abdominal wall surgery?

It sort of chose me! I work in a unit that deals with the aftermath of surgical disasters. Many patients attend with open abdomens or big incisional hernias. I wanted to learn what could be offered to these patients and how we could reconstruct them better. That was 20 years ago and I am still learning.

2. What are your ambitions and goals to serve the EHS Board?

I have always felt that surgical education, patient empowerment and advocacy are extremely important in our jobs. I enjoy the support of the EHS and of the community on which it is built. I intend to collaborate with the many EHS committees and with the support of the excellent members on them.

3. Where do you get your motivation and inspiration in life?

From family, colleagues and of course patients. Every day at work is different and I love learning new things; the great thing about medicine is that there is always something new, something different and something intriguing to learn.

4. What are the biggest challenges in the abdominal wall surgery right now?

I am an old dog about to learn a new trick (we are getting a robot for AWR). I am reassured that others in the EHS have managed it at an older age than me!

5. What is your hidden talent?

I can ride a unicycle.
