EHS Board position from June 2025: Treasurer

Applications are open – Closing date 18 November 2024

Dear EHS members,

We are pleased to announce that applications are now open for the position of the next EHS Treasurer. The Treasurer holds, besides taking part of the activities of the EHS Board of Directors, a vital role in maintaining the financial integrity of the European Hernia Society.

The role of the EHS Treasurer

Like all roles on the EHS Board, we look for energy, enthusiasm, willingness to work, bright ideas, empathy and creativity. Below is the job description outlining the key responsibilities.

  • Update the account books of the Association: This task is managed by the EHS Secretariat and reviewed by the accountant, with the Treasurer reviewing and approving the records as necessary.
  • Maintain the accounts of the Association: While the overall responsibility rests with the Treasurer, the day-to-day bookkeeping and management of financial data are carried out by the EHS Secretariat.
  • Sign cheques and payment orders, with prior approval from the General Secretary: The Treasurer is responsible for formally approving and signing cheques and payment orders. However, the preparation of these documents is managed by the EHS Secretariat, with the Treasurer ensuring compliance with financial procedures before approval.
  • Work with the other Board members to plan and approve the budget for the following year.
  • Produce an annual statement of accounts for the Board, ensuring detailed scrutiny by competent authorities: The EHS Secretariat and the accountant will prepare the annual financial statement. The Treasurer will review and approve these accounts before presenting them to the Board for detailed scrutiny.
  • Report on the balance of income and expenditure (financial report) to the Board and at General Assemblies. The General Secretary may also present this report if required: The Treasurer will present financial reports at Board meetings and General Assemblies. These reports are prepared by the EHS Secretariat and the accountant, with the Treasurer reviewing and approving them prior to presentation.
  • Hold and manage the financial records of the Association: While the Treasurer is responsible for the financial records, the EHS Secretariat will ensure that these are properly maintained and stored.
  • Management of the investments and corporate sponsorships: The Treasurer will be responsible for managing and overseeing the Association’s investments in alignment with the Board’s strategy. As well the Treasurer supports the fundraising and corporate sponsorships managed by the EHS Secretariat.
  • Fundraising and corporate sponsors: While this is primarily handled by the EHS Secretariat, the Treasurer will hold responsibility for oversight and providing support in this area.

In summary, the Treasurer carries the formal responsibility, although the role is primarily one of oversight and approval, with the practical tasks being performed by the EHS Secretariat and accountants.
