The Hernia Family Book – Miss Oroog Ali from England

Meet this month’s Hernia Family Member, Miss Oroog Ali based in the North East of England....
EHS Hernia Family Book - Miss Oroog Ali

What’s your name?
Miss Oroog Ali.

Where do you come from?
United Kingdom.

How long have you been an EHS member?
5 years.

Describe a day at work as a surgeon in your country:
I am consultant colorectal and hernia surgeon at Gateshead Health NHS Trust. I was fortunate enough to start the robotic programme at my hospital as a new consultant surgeon alongside a dynamic team. I spend my weeks performing a wide variety of robotic cases including colorectal resections and hernia surgeries.

My role requires a focus on precision, collaboration, and utilizing cutting-edge technology to ensure optimal outcomes and fast recovery for patients.

Whilst not in theatre I regularly review patients in clinics and undertake emergency work.

What is your favourite AWR procedure/hernia surgery?
I love a robotic groin hernia repair!

Why is it your favourite procedure?
It is a great example of how advancement in technology has assisted in a better understanding of anatomy and thus allows reproducible high quality surgery.

Who inspired you to become a hernia enthusiast/surgeon?
My early enrollment into the British Hernia Society board allowed me to interact with some amazing hernia surgeons who inspired me to develop expertise in this area.

Please, give a small tip or trick to share for this or any other hernia procedure?
Plan, prepare and predict. Develop a toolkit of different techniques.

Have you attended an EHS congress, meeting, or course?
Yes – I attended the EHS cadaveric robotic skills course in IRCAD which I would highly recommend. It’s a great opportunity to obtain hands-on training with the support of experienced and expert faculty. It is a must prior to starting any robotic hernia surgery.

How can the EHS help you in the future?
More diverse collaboration, continued work with the British Hernia Society.

What is your dream for the future of hernia surgery?
With greater awareness, international collaboration and standardisation it’s only a matter of time where hernia surgery can be.
