Open Position – Member of Innovation

The European Hernia Society (EHS) is seeking motivated and forward-thinking surgeons to join its Advisory Committee for Innovation.

About the Innovation Advisory Committee

The newly created Advisory Committee for Innovation aims to identify, evaluate, develop, and promote innovative technologies, methodologies, and collaborative initiatives that have the potential to improve patient care, surgical outcomes, surgeon education, or research in the field of abdominal wall surgery.

The committee will serve as a platform to connect clinicians, researchers, industry partners, and entrepreneurs, fostering the development and implementation of novel solutions within the field of hernia surgery.

As artificial intelligence and digital tools increasingly influence healthcare, the EHS seeks to bring together surgeons who are eager to shape how these technologies can be applied safely, effectively, and ethically within our specialty.

The committee will explore and promote innovative approaches in areas such as:

• Artificial intelligence for evidence synthesis and guideline development.
• Artificial intelligence-assisted literature review, data analysis, and clinical research.
• Machine learning applications in surgical outcomes research and quality improvement.
• Emergent robotic platforms for hernia surgery.
• Digital platforms for education, training, and continuous professional development.
• Simulation, virtual learning environments, and intelligent educational tools.
• Predictive analytics and decision-support systems in abdominal wall surgery.
• Emerging technologies that enhance collaboration, knowledge dissemination, and patient care.

Role and responsibilities

Committee members will:

• Contribute to the identification of emerging technologies and innovative concepts relevant to hernia and abdominal wall surgery.
• Participate in the evaluation, discussion, and development of projects related to artificial intelligence applications, new devices, digital health solutions, educational technologies, and research.
• Support the integration of innovative methodologies into EHS activities, including guidelines, educational programs, and scientific initiatives.
• Support the development of innovation-focused projects, workshops, and sessions during EHS meetings and events.
• Facilitate collaboration between clinicians, researchers, data scientists, engineers, start-ups, industry partners, and academic institutions.
• Promote a culture of innovation and evidence-based adoption of new technologies within the EHS community.
• Participate actively in committee meetings and contribute to ongoing initiatives.

Candidate profile

Applicants should:

• Be member of the EHS.
• Be practicing surgeons, data scientists or engineers with an interest in abdominal wall surgery and hernia care.
• Have a strong interest in innovation, emerging technologies, digital health, artificial intelligence and machine learning, medical devices, surgical education, entrepreneurship, or clinical/translational research.
• Be motivated to contribute to multidisciplinary and international collaborations.
• Demonstrate creativity, initiative, and a willingness to explore new approaches to clinical challenges.
• Possess good communication skills and be able to work effectively within an international team.
• Have a solid background and experience in artificial intelligence, clinical/translational research, or big data use in health care.
• Previous involvement in innovation projects, start-ups, digital health initiatives, clinical research, or industry collaborations is desirable but not mandatory.
