The Hernia Family Book – Tuure Saarinen from Finland

Meet this month’s Hernia Family Member from Finland, Tuure Saarinen....
EHS Hernia family book: Tuure Saarinen

What’s your name and age?
Tuure Saarinen, 43.

Where do you come from?
Finland.

How long have you been an EHS member?
Since 2021.

Describe a day at work as a surgeon in your country:
First, I meet up with the day´s first patient in the OR. Then I either take part in a scientific meeting or a multimodal meeting, where we discuss challenging cases. Then I start my daily procedures. During the day, between surgeries, I go to the ward to see my patients from the previous day. Once a week, I am at the outpatient clinic.

What is your favourite AWR procedure/hernia surgery?
Any robotic procedure. Currently, I find the subxiphoid anatomy and “the Madrid way” of doing a TAR very interesting.

Why is it your favourite procedure?
The ability to do large procedures minimally invasive and to be able to learn from every procedure.

Who inspired you to become a hernia enthusiast/surgeon?
Jaana Vironen from my unit has taught me a lot about hernia surgery. Additionally, having David Lourié as my proctor has been incredibly inspiring!

Please, give a small tip or trick to share for this or any other hernia procedure?
In the console, when it gets difficult, just clutch both controls and relax your shoulders.

Have you attended an EHS congress, meeting, or course?
Yes.

Which made the biggest impression on you?
The hernia community. Hernia surgeons are in the congress to help each other, not to brag about their own results.

What made it great?
The atmosphere and great talks.

How can the EHS help you in the future?
Keep organising and endorsing excellent courses and congresses.

What is your dream for the future of hernia surgery?
My personal dream is to become a better surgeon and to help younger surgeons in their journey in becoming better surgeons.
