Esteemed Members of the EHS and Dear Hernia Friends,
I am a specialist in general surgery from Israel, and I am happy to share my impressions of my incredibly rewarding surgical fellowship in abdominal wall surgery at the esteemed Abdominal Wall Surgical Unit of Vall d’Hebron Hospital in Barcelona, Spain. Directed by Professor Manuel López Cano, this program has offered me an unparalleled opportunity to deepen my expertise in abdominal wall surgery through a hands-on approach and exposure to a high volume of complex cases.
The fellowship has been intensive and immensely fulfilling. Throughout my stay, I have participated in multiple surgeries, ranging from routine procedures to highly intricate and technically demanding cases. This exposure has significantly enhanced my understanding of abdominal wall anatomy, surgical techniques, pre-optimization and postoperative care. The exceptional volume of surgeries exceeded my expectations when I applied for this fellowship, allowing me to refine my skills in every way.
What truly sets this experience apart is the team I have had the privilege to work with. Professor López Cano, despite his immense skill, extensive experience, and vast knowledge, is remarkably kind, humble, and approachable, making the learning environment both inspiring and welcoming. All the other surgeons in the unit, a group of talented individuals, have also been exceptional mentors, generously sharing their expertise and encouraging discussions and innovation. The atmosphere in the OR and beyond was always positive and welcoming, filled with jokes and smiles that made the experience even more enjoyable. The entire team has made me feel like a valued member of their surgical family from day one.
Beyond the operating room, I have also had the opportunity to engage in academic discussions, attend multidisciplinary meetings, and explore innovative techniques and technologies. These experiences have provided me with a well-rounded understanding of both the clinical and academic aspects of abdominal wall surgery. I know that the skills, insights, and confidence I have gained here will have a lasting impact on my career and enable me to bring advanced techniques back to my home country.
I am profoundly grateful to the European Hernia Society for facilitating this opportunity, as well as to Professor López Cano and his entire superb team at Vall d’Hebron Hospital. Their mentorship and support have been instrumental in making this fellowship a truly transformative experience.
Muchas gracias,
Dra. Lauren Lahav.
