Dear Hernia Friends,

This is András Papp here, a colorectal and hernia surgeon from a county hospital in Hudiksvall, Sweden.

I´ve been particularly interested in abdominal wall surgery for a long time, and we in our region have been trying to raise the standard of hernia surgery for many years. The EHS “Short stay travel grant” provided an excellent opportunity to continue on this path.

I already knew Frederik Helgstrand, the head of the hernia team at the Zealand University Hospital in Denmark, we´ve met on several meetings in Sweden before, and I also knew that the mentioned Danish team has practiced up-to-date and modern hernia surgery, which was the reason why I chose them as my goal.

I´d like to thank the European Society for their support. I´ve got the opportunity to spend 2 extremely pleasant, professionally useful and educational weeks with the hernia team in Køge, who welcomed me with friendship and did their best to ensure that I could see as much as possible and return to my department enriched.

I was lucky, the first week started with a hernia masterclass, which I also got to participate in, and then I simply spent the days and worked together with my colleagues in Køge. Monday was for large open surgeries, Tuesday and Wednesday for robotic hernia surgery, Thursday for MDT, outpatient office, possibly one-day surgery, and Friday also for one-day hernia cases.

The program of the second week was similar, I was fortunate to meet and spend two days with the Swiss professor Ulrich Dietz, an outstanding pioneer in minimally invasive hernia surgery.

Unforgettable 2 weeks! Now I´m back home, I´ve learnt a lot and gained a lot of experience, which I really hope we can use to improve the care of our hernia patients.

Thanks for everything guys!

András
