European Hernia Society guidelines on prevention and treatment of parastomal hernias

Introduction

The evidence-based work on these guidelines on the diagnosis and management of parastomal hernias revealed the lack of evidence on several topics, which need to be addressed by multicenter trials. Some recommendations could be supported by evidence, including that parastomal hernia prevention using a prophylactic mesh for end colostomies reduces parastomal herniation.

The guidelines were published by the European Hernia Society in 2018.
