Questionnaire: Relationships and cognitive aspects in surgery

Dear members of the EHS,

On behalf of Dr. Manuel LĂłpez Cano and Mireia Verdaguer we would like to encourage all EHS members to answer the questionnaire below.

The profession of general and digestive surgery, as well as other surgical specialities, is known for its high physical and mental demands. The hospital environment, long working hours, the need for precision, and the necessity for critical decision-making (often under high-pressure situations), alongside with the level of responsibility, can negatively impact in the cognitive and occupational performance, as well as psychological well-being. These factors, including the so-called “non-technical skills”, are increasingly recognised as particularly relevant in surgical environments because they directly affect the quality of care and workplace dynamics.

With the following questionnaire we aim to identify the quality of interpersonal relationships in the surgical field and their role in the decision-making, evaluate the cognitive impact of stress and burnout syndrome, and understand some of the available tools to mitigate their impact. This anonymous survey will allow the EHS to uncover the challenges that its members or any other general and digestive surgeon face in daily clinical practice and promote the development of training programmes focused on decision-making and stress management in our field. Your contribution will help the future of the surgical community.

We thank you for your participation in advance.
