Name: Angelo Iossa

Age: 39 years old

Where do you come from? Italy

For how long have you been an EHS member?:
3 years.

Please describe a day at work as surgeon in your country:

I’ve started working for an Academic Center in a Private Hospital as a researcher of Sapienza University of Rome since 2016. Usually, my week is divided into three parts: Monday, Tuesday and Thursday surgical activity in OR and office in the late afternoon. Wednesday and Friday: student lessons and private office. Weekend: it depends by hospital shift, usually two per months.

Who inspired you to become a hernia enthusiast/ surgeon?
During my residency program: Professor Gossetti in Rome,
During my research fellowship: Professor Watkins, Ohio
At present: Professor Cavallaro, Rome

What is your favourite AWR procedure/ hernia surgery?
Open abdominal wall reconstruction (Rives/posterior TAR).

Please, give a small tip or trick to share for this or any other hernia procedure?
I’ve changed the first trocar placement in TEP procedure for inguinal hernia repair starting as an E-TEP with a median supraumbilical access. It made it a lot more simpler, first dissection and also procedure completion.

Have you attended an EHS congress, meeting, or course?
Yes, but not routinely.

If yes, which made the biggest impression on you?
It’s interesting, all time, see a lot of innovations in AWR and a lot of new technologies coming from the industry

What made it great?
The comparison with different colleagues and different work settings.

How can the EHS help you in the future?
EHS can help me making an easier comparison with other colleagues and can help me to share my experience and my clinical results.

What is your dream for your future in hernia surgery?
My dream is to choose the best procedure for every patient based on AI reconstruction analysing and literature outcomes.
